Note to self: don't blog while hungry

Food that travels well (NYT) - an interesting article about the life cycle assessment of food production. To summarize, locally grown isn't always more environmentally friendly, because the distance food travels to our plate is far from the only input.

Keeping that in mind, all things being equal, choosing local food will always be a preferable option. I know I'd rather pay a local U-Pick for local, sweet, normal-sized strawberries than a grocery store for robot strawberries shipped from California, during the short period of time that I'm able to make that choice in my climate.

So you just have to balance it out - pesticides in my body, or subsidizing a semi-load of product from California. And who really knows if the organic stuff is really and truly "certified" organic... or if it's any safer... ahh... I think the point is that you should plant your own garden and then you know what went into your food...
